Sari LaGeek has 3 passions. Mazda, photography and speed. And when you morph these passions together something magical will always happen. Sari is the kind of Mazda owner we at MazdaMovement gravitate towards. We wanted to know more so we asked him in his own words how this all started…
For most of us, the love of cars began early in our lives. For me, the passion began to emerge at a very young age. I struggle to recall a time in my life when I didn’t care for cars. Seriously! Some of my earliest and fondest memories consist of badgering my father to let me sit on his lap and “drive”. I would often flip a few shoes over, put a stick in between the couch cushions and make racecar noises all night.
I can go on and on, as I’m sure we all could.
I would continue my childhood dreams until I finished college. Sure, I had a couple Civics and Nissans, and a few blown engines that just couldn’t keep up, but it wasn’t until I got a “real job” and purchased my first new sports car, a Mazdaspeed 3, that I would be able to pursue my lifelong passion. I had known I wanted this car since 2010 when I test drove a gray one, and I was finally able to pull the trigger in 2012. If I thought my passion was strong then, boy was I in for a surprise.
Like many, the mod itch didn’t really kick in hard…at first. I started with an intake and some motor mount inserts. I started to scour the forums and Facebook pages and began to meet up with the local guys. I asked all the common “noob” questions…we all know the drill. I began hearing things like, “The car is too quiet!” And before I knew it, I had an aftermarket exhaust. After every new part, I kept telling myself, “This is it! This is the last mod.” Of course, we all know this isn’t true. I met and began working with Rob Finkle of Hypnotic Tuning and began to explore the world of tuning and what a proper tune could do to this car. I started to learn about what else I could do to squeeze even more power out of it and before I knew it a magical meth kit just appeared on my doorstep. It was definitely magical because I started to put down some serious power…for a stock turbo, of course.
By this point, my car was all dressed up with nowhere to go. That is, until I found autocross.
Autocross opened a whole new world for me. I was able to explore the Mazda’s limits each and every event. It suddenly wasn’t just about speed anymore, it wasn’t about horsepower and going fast in a straight line. The focus shifted to creating an intricate balance between horsepower and handling. The venture to find out the limits of how much speed could be carried through corners began, and soon after the venture to find out how to create new limits. I raced my entire first seasons of autocross on the stock suspension setup, with the exception of a rear sway-bar. I quickly experienced the real downside of driving a 3400lb.+ wagon in the tight corners. There was a lack of rigidity, excessive body roll and of course the traction issues were a killer. Nonetheless, starting on the stock setup helped me to understand these issues and gave me a starting point in terms of modifications. I was able to make every event my first year and pulled the W for the season.
Of course, this would only be the beginning.
In following my passion, GE3KSPD (“Geek Speed”) Motorsports was founded in early 2014. In the beginning, my two passions, cars and photography, were combined into one platform meant to explore and share these passions. In the beginning, GE3KSPD was purely focused on providing beautiful automotive images to the community. Now, GE3KSPD has become a team of car enthusiasts working together to continue to not only provide the beautiful images, but also blog posts about experiences and reviews of products, as well as build features with mod lists and information on the rides of other passionate members of the car community. This team of enthusiasts also competes in motorsport events such as autocross and drag racing, providing footage and feedback on our YouTube channel. Most importantly, we are a team connected through a deep seeded passion that we are able to share with fellow enthusiasts.
